In a very short period of time Bulgaria can turn into a leading golf destination on the Balkans, said Manuel Ferry Sanchez, president of Ferry Group, during the discussion "Golf Tourism - an Exotic Hobby or a Profitable Investment", part of the Eight Building-Investment Forum. "I see Bulgaria as serious golf tourism competition for Spain, because your country has all the prerequisites for its development", said Sanchez.
According to him, golf can be played in Bulgaria 7-8 months every year, the country has a suitable climate, wonderful scenery and many mineral springs. All this, if well combined, can attract many foreign players.
Sanchez also said it isn't true that golf is an elite sport, because in Europe there are many golf courses, where people without high income can play. "Golf, however, is a specific product, you cannot sell it on catalog. It needs serious advertising, it also needs visitors of a certain course to tell about it to other people and this way the number of players will increase" added Sanchez. He thinks that there's a need of popularizations, this is why are built schools, which are easy of access for a lot of people.
If an area or a country is to be made into a golf-destination, it must have several golf courses some 30-40 km away from one another. "Golfers don't like to play only at one golf course, they like to change scenery" also said Manuel Sanchez.
Bulgarian government administration shouldn't ignore the golf tourism and has to cooperate with people who decide to develop it, not to stop it with bureaucracy. According to Sanchez this kind of tourism brings a substantial income to a lot of countries all over the world.
Approximately 65 million people worldwide play golf. 90% of them are concentrated in the USA, Japan and Europe. There are 16 000 golf courses and 27 million players in the US, and the incomes reach 47 billion euro per year. The players in Europe are between 5 and 6 million and the courses are about 2300. "In 2004 in Spain there were 294 golf courses; the players are about 300 000, and along with the foreigners this number doubles," added Sanchez. He also said that the incomes from golf tourism in Spain last year reached 2,375 billion euro.
"Since there are already two finished golf courses, near Ihtiman and Sliven, and a third one's in construction near Razgrad, the strategy of the company for the near future is that there be such golf courses built near larger cities in Bulgaria" stated Lilyan Todorov, president of Air Sofia Golf Club. He also said that the next project is about building a golf court 10 km away from Sofia. According to him, with the increase of the number of courses will increase the number of golfers in Bulgaria, and for the moment they are around 150 people.
According to Rumen Draganov, chairman of the Tourism Council in Sofia, golf in our country will become a mass sport as soon as there are a lot more training facilities as well as golf courses with more affordable charges.
