Reaction after the Decision of the Government to Develop Golf Tourism
"In a country, where until recently golf was an unpopular game, golf courses appear out of nowhere here and there in Bulgaria, while the government is discussing new ways of attracting more tourists" is said in a comment of France Press.

"Golf tourism is extremely important for attracting richer tourists" claims Kancho Stoychev, who hopes to open a new golf course near Balchik in June.

"If average tourists normally spend around 50-100 euro per day, golf tourists can spend 400-500 euro", he thinks.

Stoychev asked Gary Player, who is considered to be one of the best golf players of all times, to make a project about his new court. In an recent interview Player said that golf is perhaps a way to attract rich businessmen "who may later decide to invest in the country", which is presently one of the poorest countries in Europe.

Without golf courses Bulgaria will probably remain a cheap tourist destination, which attracts a lot of people without a real economic effect, says Stoychev.

Bulgarian seaside and mountain resorts are long known among tourists in Western Europe, former socialist countries and Russia. And while this led to a boom in the building of second-class hotels, the rich tourists went elsewhere in search of more peaceful and not that crowded places.

The foreign investors felt the golf potential of Bulgaria - with its soft climate and nature landmarks. "When I first saw the sea coast here, I knew it was made for a golf course" shares the British investor David Newman, who's building a golf course near Kableshkovo.

"I remember what Costa Del Rika in Spain, now Costa Del Golf, used to be 15 years ago. Bulgaria is now what Spain used to be back then", he adds. Golf tourism is now beginning to find its way in Bulgaria, but right now a lot of courses are being constructed and golf in the country can turn into a big tourist attraction, says Newman.

Now there are three working golf courses in Bulgaria, and 15 are still in construction." Our goal is to turn Bulgaria into a competitive golf destination, attractive for richer tourists. Golf tourism is one of the most profitable in this business" wrote an analytical newspaper some time ago.

However, such offers sit on thin ice, considering the storm of troubles in the country. "Sega" Newspaper called this idea "an eccentric whim", and "Capital" summoned the minister of regional development to pay some attention to the road holes.

"The holes on the roads are several times more than the golf holes of all courts all over the world. No rich man will risk driving on them" writes "Trud". Investors also pay attention to the need of improving the infrastructure around the projects.

"It is absolutely necessary that the infrastructure is improved" claims Newman. "If today there are 4.5 million tourists visiting your country, and you want them to be 12 million, everything has to be improved" he adds.

More than 5 million foreigners visited Bulgaria in 2007, and tourism formed 16% of the Gross Domestic Product of the country, states the official data. In the same time the small Balkan country with approximate population of 7.6 million people is one of the poorest in the EU, which it joined in 2007.
